So you are out in your yard on the patio and just taking in the scenery of your back yard. You really start looking at it and are thinking there’s no color, it looks barren. Then you start brainstorming on ideas that you could implement to liven up your yard. Would I like to add some plants to my landscape? If so, what kind of plants would interest me? If you plan to add flowering shrubs to your yard, I have come up with some of the most popular that are being bought and planted today.
The good thing about shrubs is they can serve for many purposes in your home gardening experience. They emit wonderful smells, come in a variety of color including flowers and foliage. They can be used as part of your garden scheme in your flower beds, privacy is also another benefit. They attract wild life, as birds can use them for food, shelter and to raise the young in the spring time.
Flower shrubs do not require much care either. The occasional use of fertilizer, pruning and may require some extra watering if dry conditions persist. The better care you take of your shrubs, the more rewards you will receive.
Below is a list of some of the more Popular Flowering Shrubs:
Viburnum Shrubs
There are more than 150 species of this shrub. Viburnum is one of the most underused flowering shrubs in the garden. Usually found in Botanical Gardens and Arboretums, viburnum requires very little attention and maintenance. This shrub is very resistance to pests and disease so that is a great benefit
Weigela Shrubs
This is a beautiful deciduous flowering shrub with an upright weeping habit. The weigela species is another extremely popular shrub. Flower colors can range from pure white to ruby red. The leaf colors add a spectacular contrast including dark green, purple, variegated and bright yellow foliage. This is one of the most favorite plants of butterflies, so if you enjoy having and watching butterflies this is a must have bush.
Forsythia Shrubs
This is another popular deciduous flowering shrub that can grow to a height of 8 - 12 feet high. This shrub produces upright arching branches with bright yellow flowers in early spring. This shrub has a preference of a loose rich soil, but can tolerate almost any type of soil. You should prune/trim the older branches down to the ground after blooming has been completed. Like the weigela shrub this bush is also very easy to maintain.
Hydrangea Shrubs
The hydrangea to me is one the most beautiful bushes. I am in awe of the flowers that are in extremely large clusters. There is also such a color variety I want to buy them all. This type of shrub is made up of mostly the flowering type, also known for its host of trees and vines. The most unique quality of the hydrangea is that you can actually change the color of the blooms by changing the PH content of the soil. The more acidic the soil the bluer your blossoms will be. While the more alkaline soil will produce a delicate pink coloration. Unfortunately you will not be able to do this with the white flowers.
Lilac Shrubs
It seems the lilac has been around for ages and was an old time favorite and still is today. They are fairly easy to maintain with only a needed pruning after blooming period is completed. This shrub prefers full sun in a well drained area. An excellent benefit of this bush is that it attracts butterflies and bees. This would be a beneficial shrub to plant around you garden since it does attract the bees, which in turn will help with pollination of your garden plants.
Hibiscus Shrubs
This shrub is another beauty. I personally have this one in a container that I put out in the summertime and bring indoors in the winter. This way I can enjoy the blooms produced by this shrub all year long. Yes, I said all year long. Since I do have this in a container, it does required daily watering. But it is worth it as I get the full effect of the shrub all year long. What more could you ask for?
In conclusion there is an awesome variety of flowering shrubs out there for your to choose from. There are so many wonderful varieties and types out there that for me, is a very difficult decision to make on what shrubs I want to obtain.
Good luck in the exciting venture of picking out your flowering shrub or shrubs. Have fun with it because they will add a wonderful addition to any landscape or container. I know which ever flowering shrubs you choose, you will not be disappointed. And with proper care will give you years of enjoyment.
