Okay I'll start with the don'ts. Don't EVER over fertilize your lawn. Twice as much is not twice as good. Over fertilizing can burn leaf tissue and stimulate too much top growth at the expense of root growth. So please read and follow your fertilizer instruction

To rejuvenate your existing lawn, Do aerate to open the soil so that water and nutrients can penetrate to the roots.
Don't stake trees. Research has clearly demonstrated that staking isn't necessary. In fact, staking results in a weaker tree. The trunks of unstaked trees are allowed to sway or bend in the wind, and that makes stronger trees.

Try using organics instead of chemicals on your lawn. The organic lawn field has really come a long way. Its worth the try.
