I live by a very busy main road, and not only is it unsightly, but it's very noisy. As such, I want to plant something along the front border of my garden to not only cut the horrid view out, but reduce the noise a bit. I vaguely remember seeing a TV program where they used trees of some type, but can't remember what they were. Does anyone else know please?

If you don't mind a tree that requires a bit of pruning to stop it spreading too far, Willow Viminalis would be a good choice, and it looks attractive too:) . Failing that, try to go for shrubs/trees with large, or densely packed leaves, such as Plane or Beech.
You probably want a fast growing shrub such as the Leyland Cypress. Your best bet would be to plant 2 row of shrubs or a row of low shrubs with some fuller trees behind them. That way you will get the privacy from the trees and the soundproofing from the shrubs.

Spruces are good for noise reduction, and some of them have a very strong scent, which could help reduce the smell of the traffic too.
The trees need to be planted as close as possible to prevent noise from coming in but the problem is do the trees grow if they are growed close together?
Last but not least, build rock or masonry walls, or solid wooden fences beside the tree.

I don't really recommend planting a lot of trees together to prevent noise but instead plant trees that branches out a lot. Trees that are planted to stop noise are mainly quite "huge" or a least big so they need quite some water. If you plant them pretty close. I guess you need to water them VERY regularly, IMO.

Plant some leafs on the wall.. i mean, cover the wall, may helps a little on reducing noise. To get more noise buffer, you have plant the leaves into thicker layer.

I'm thanking about planting this type of tree for privacy. Spaced about 4 feet apart. I was concerned if this tree would develop the dead dry innards such as an Italian Cypress
