I know this pic is very rough, but it serves my purposes. The white ovals are stepping stones along a path going between two lawns. The problem is, the rest of the path is plain dirt, and I can't think of anything that would look nice with my white stones. Someone help!!!

Something dark would bring out the brightness of the stones, and give a bit of contrast. A dark mulch maybe? Or that black gravel?

Either you make the path darker or brighten it. I think brighter would be better, if the path is in dark color, too much it will brings out. What do you think if you use small stones to fill the path?

I'm inclined to agree with Johnny. White stepping stones must be quite bright, and you must have realised this when you laid them. Why choose light stones, just to cover up their looks by surrounding them with more light background colour?
I have a suggestion as to what you could use. How about crushed slate? It may not be one of the first things most people think of when doing a path, but it would look great with your white stepping stones.

Great idea, Lorry. Why didn't I think of that? :p
I'll buy some slate tomorrow, and give my sledge hammer some exercise :)

Hi there Piglet,
One of the main thoughts for your plan is to accent or highlight the white step stones by using a darker groundcover plant. At night time the darker plant will make the step stones stand out making it easier for you and your guests to see them in a no or low light situation.
Depending on where you live, a great way to fill those areas is to use "Mondo Grass" (Ophiopogon japonicus). Available in either one gallon or 1 quart containers this is an excellent choice for pathways. It requires very little maintenance and can literally be maintained with a weed whacker as it only grows about 6" tall. If you are desiring an even lower maintenance plant, try DWARF Mondo Grass .. it only grows about 3" tall.
Either version of Mondo Grass will do well with traffic and will eventually spread and totally fill in the gaps.
Check out this link for an example of Dw. Mondo we recently installed between step stones: http://www.heavenlycreationslandscaping.com/index_files/courtBA.jpg
Here is another example from on line thru Yahoo Images:
