Hi all.

I'm glad I found this forum, as I have a bit of a problem. My wife has been saying for ages that she'd really like a knot garden. After buying a magazine recently, a picture of one from a stately home changed it from 'would like' to 'must have ASAP'.

Of course, planting the knot garden falls into my list of chores, but therein lies the problem. I know how one should look, but I don't have a clue as to what sort of plants are suitable to make one.

Can anyone help?

Herbs work very well for a knot garden, I have one myself. Just choose 2 herbs with similar soil requirements, but both of a different shade of green. Then plant them in the shape of your chosen knot. I believe small shrubs can be used as well, if you'd prefer.

If you're doing a traditional 2-tone knot garden, would this -

and this -

suit your needs?

The top pic is Cotton Lavender [Santolina Chamaecyparissus], and the bottom pic (the small shrubs in the gravel) is Dwarf Box [Buxus Sempervirens 'Nana']
