Is it possible to have irrigation installed under a lawn, as opposed to having an above-ground sprinkler?

I don't think you can get an actual 'underground' system, but you can get these...

Which dissapear into your lawn when not in use.
Any irrigation company should sell them.

The picture Harold78 showed is considered as underground irrigation.

I was actually after a system that fed water directly to the roots :(

To answer your question, yes. I have read and seen plans about these systems that some golf courses use. The challenge though, is you have to have the right conditions and design make up to make them work. They are very(!) costly, and the payback is over a long time. It's called "subsurface irrigation".
hope this helps
