My garden slopes down badly towards one corner. I'd like to level it off, but I don't want to pay too much, and I've heard retaining walls can be expensive. What would be the cheapest way of doing this?

The only thing I can think of to solve your problem is... A retaining wall!!
Although it could be expensive, if it's only to hold the soil or whatever in, and not for looks, a plain concrete wall should be pretty cheap.

As you can see from this price list, yu can get retaining blocks for as little as $5 each, probably less if you spend a bit of time shopping around, and if you build it yourself, there's no charge for manhours either :)

If it's just a case of getting the job done, and looks don't matter, why not just get some large concrete slabs, and bolt them to some concrete posts? It's cheap, and althoug it looks ugly-ish, it'll do the job as well as any 'proper' wall.

The only suggestion I can offer you is a retaining wall. Maybe a wooden one would be cheaper than stone or brick

Once you have a retaining wall done, there really isn't much worry or maintenance on it

There are many types of retaining walls. You can construct one from concrete blocks, natural stones, rubble walls and wood retaining walls. Using wood would be the cheapest way to go. You can do this project yourself, pay a landscape company to do it, or even get a local handyman/carpenter to help you. Just make sure you have the proper drainage and you use treated wood
