Hi,
I live in a pretty damp area, and I've got poor drainage in my back garden anyway, but I'd really like put a patio in for the few weeks of hot, sunny weather we get during summer. I wasn't sure whether I'd need to put anything down under the patio - like some sort of foundations - to stop it subsiding.

If you can't find a way around this problem, would raised decking suit your needs? I have decking in my back yard, and it looks grand.

You would definately need to lay a sub-surface under the patio if your land is very damp. How deep you would need it, and the composition would depend on how large the patio is going to be.

Layer 1 - Ballast
Layer 2 - Gravel (Size 10-14mm, 1 inch deep)
Layer 3 - Poured concrete (1 inch Deep)

This gives a very basic sub-surface for small to medium patios.
