I'm trying to make my garden look like a traditional English cottage garden, but down the side of my house is rather dark at night, and I need some lighting ideas that won't spoil the traditional look.

I am not sure if this will spoil the effect at all but I will suggest to go for some dim light. Thats my opinion. A lot people think differently from me.
Take a look at this. Maybe the top light, with a low wattage bulb would brighten it up a bit, whilst still keeping the olde worlde feel.

I'm assuming here that you 'traditional English cottage' garden has plentiful amounts of green shrubs. If not please disregard this post.
If you want a more natural look, this sort of light, http://www.anthonydegrey.com/lighting/H048.lasso ,
with a green bulb will light you up at ground level, and if hidden below a shrub will be out of sight during the day.

Agreed with them, dim lights are nice.. won't spoil the traditional feel.
It would be nice to take photo under dim lights..

To go for a very traditional look, you could look around your local car-boot sales and 2nd hand shops, and try to find an oil-fired lamp. You can usually adjust how bright they are, and look very 19th century.
