How much to spend on edger?

Last year I bought a very cheap edger for my lawn. I had the hardest time using it. The string kept unraveling and I never had consistent cutting. Do you think I just had bad luck, bought a low level brand, or that you need to spend a good amount of money to get a good working one?

I think I spent about $40 but I have seen them above $100.

Whenever I buy anything I try and buy stuff thats in the middle-not too expensive but not cheap either.
