Landscaping For Security

Although aesthetics is usually the main goal when designing a landscape, security is an area that is sometimes overlooked. There are many things you can design into your landscape to make your home and property more secure. Landscape lighing is definitely a must. Also, well placed thorny bushes added below windows on the first floor will help deter burglars.

Please post any tips you have regarding landscaping for security.

Keep your shrubs trimmed so they are not too high or big for burglars to hide behind. Or instead of shrubs, you can just plant perennials in your front entryway

I've read that putting down small pebbles or stones on a walkway or foot path is a great idea for security. This obviously makes it more noisy and less desirable for an intruder to walk on since it may draw attention to them. I think its a great idea for walkways that are on the side of your house hwere maybe there isn't as much visibility.

Don't plant trees by your windows that are easily climable. You don't want anybody to be able to climb up to your second floor and gain access to your house through an upstairs window.

I'm a big fan of motion detectors. I think they work well. I have one installed by my garage and one over my back shed.

I think good landscape lighting is essential. It's a good idea to make sure hedges are not too tall and all parts of the house are lit. I have some lighting behind some of my shrubs. It gives the house a great look as well as keeping the dark areas by my hedges illuminated.
