Our soil is much different from what I'm normally used to up North. The soil here is a red clay. I'm not sure what I'll need to do in order to make a garden work here. I hope it's not going to be to difficult to grow vege's

Yes clay soil is definitely more of a challenge to work with. I would pile a layer of top soil on and make sure you mulch. Don't let the area get too dry

I don't know if this will help or not but I've heard of people putting coffee grinds down on the soil.
