My father was in the landscape department few years back. He tried to propose to the higher officer of his department to plant fruit trees along the road instead of landscape trees. Unfortunately the idea was rejected.
So what do you guys think about it? Is it a good idea to plant fruit trees along the road or highway?

It depends really on which fruits. If the trees in question bear a lot of fruit, that could lead to quite a mess on the roadside if no-one comes along to pick them. On a residential road that could cause a lot of pest problems. On the other hand, a lot of fruit trees look very attractive when flowering, and on a non-residential road, the aesthetic effect of the trees would be worth a small amount of rotten fruit. More work for the road sweepers too :P
I agree with Harold, in my opinion, fruit trees are not really suitable along the road or highway. Generally, fruit trees require slightly more care than the others. For road and highway, trees that requires the less maintainance is the best

Although they aren't actually fruit, most nut trees would be suitable. My road has Horse Chestnut trees lining it, and I know of others with Cobnut and Walnut trees.
